are proud to present
HAIRitage: Celebrating the Legacy of the Barber Shop with Art, Poetry and Jazz
Thursday, March 28th, at 7:00pm
Master Barber & Beauty Shop
was established in 1952 in Sacramento, CA. The establishment was
purchased by Earlie D. and Mary Brown in 1974 and it remains family
owned and operated. Not only is Master’s known for styling, shaving and
cutting hair, it is also an amazing institution where men, boys and
women come to discuss politics, religion, sports and life. Since the
late 1990’s, Master Barber & Beauty Shop has become a major cultural
art leader that has facilitated, engaged, and presented visual artists,
poets, writers, musicians and others. These events have been captured
and documented
in a table book and CD.
Visual Artist and Photographer, Gerry GOS”
Simpson, teamed up with the Brown Family at the request of Marichal J.
Brown, to capture the essence of the barber shop and the events that
were being presented. Several premier poets, artists and musicians
participated in documenting the amazing cultural art movement that
exists in Sacramento.
The Foreword by Emeritus Professor of Art History,
Allan M. Gordon, is intense and passionate. HAIRitage includes poems
and writings by Dr. Eugene B. Redmond, Geri Hunter , Charles Curtis
Blackwell and others, art and quotes by Master Artist Ben Jones, Milton
‘510’ Bowens , Dr. Bill Releford and others, while the CD features music
by Steve Gundhi Trio, Anthony Coleman II, Garrett Perkins and others.
