February 7: Jack Boulware, co-author of Gimme Something Better

On February 7, Time Tested Books welcomes Jack Boulware, co-author of Gimme Something Better, an oral history of the San Francisco Bay Area's legendary punk rock scene, published by Penguin Books.

While the punk scenes of New York and Los Angeles have been thoroughly documented, the San Francisco Bay Area's has not had an extensive look ... until now. Gimme Something Better is the first major attempt to do justice to the Bay Area's deep-rooted underground music story. Boulware and co-author Silke Tudor not only trace the history (using the words of the musicians and scenemakers who were there) of early SF punk legends--Crime, The Avengers, Dead Kennedys--and the untold tale of the early 80s hardcore scene, but they also draw a connection from those roots to the 1990s Gilman scene and the revolutionary effect of bands like Operation Ivy and Green Day on contemporary rock & roll. Gimme Something Better is both an important piece of music history and an excellent read.

Jack Boulware is the author of Sex, American Style and San Francisco Bizarro. His freelance writing has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Washington Post, Playboy, Maxim, Salon, and San Francisco Chronicle, among others. For ten years he was a columnist and features writer for SF Weekly. He is co-founder of San Francisco’s annual Litquake literary festival.

The event is on Sunday, February 7, at 7pm, and is free to the public. Gimme Something Better is available at the bookstore now!
